The Azulejos Story

Pedro Quintanilla was a man of art, passion, and tradition. Born into a prominent family in Mexico City, he grew up surrounded by the beauty, architecture, art, and rich colors of Mexico. Always prominent in the beauty, were the hand-painted azulejos tiles that adorned the haciendas, patios, and kitchens of his home country, which inspired the name for the brand, tequila Azulejos (ah-soo-leh-hos).

Thirty years ago, Pedro Quintanilla, together with his good friend and well known entrepreneur, Alfredo Miguel, founded Azulejos tequila. Azulejos was ahead of its time being one of the first brands with combining tequila and hand-painting, both, true forms of art. It’s first of a kind hand-painted decanter bottles, paying homage to the history, tradition, and beauty of Mexico, pushed boundaries changing and the tequila industry forever by intertwining tequila with art.

Pedro's vision for Azulejos was simple: to create a tequila that was of the highest quality, produced in the traditional method without any additives. Quintanilla searched Jalisco for the finest agaves and the most experienced master distillers...

... to craft an extremely smooth, fine, premium world-class tequila that was a piece of art as much inside as it was on the outside. He was committed to maintaining the rich history of the ancient process of tequila production and to uphold the traditions. But he also wanted the tequila to be a work of art, something that people would admire and cherish long after the last drop had been consumed. To achieve this, he commissioned hand-painted bottles that were just as beautiful as the tequila inside.

Over the years, Azulejos has become a beloved brand, not just for its delicious tequila, but for the artistry of its bottles as well. Pedro was proud to support the artisans who created these beautiful bottles, and he made it a priority to work with local Mexican craftsmen and craftswomen to ensure that the bottles were of the highest quality. The hand-blown glass bottles are not only crafted by hand by local trade-master artisans but are also made from recycled glass to minimize our environmental footprint.

Pedro's passion for tequila led him to create not just one, but several unique and beautiful brands. He created Skelly Tequila, a tribute to Dia de los Muertos, with bottles featuring the iconic skeleton figures. He also created Trophy Head tequila, with bottles that are hand-painted with intricate designs, making each one a work of art.

Pedro passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on through the brand that he created. Today, Azulejos is managed by Pedro's wife Linda and their son Chris, as well as long time business parter Alfredo, who have kept his vision alive. They continue to produce high-quality tequila in the traditional method, and they remain committed to supporting the local artisans who create the hand-painted bottles.

Pedro's last project, Gran Alambique Tequila, which is set to debut in 2023, is a testament to his enduring legacy and his unwavering commitment to creating tequila that is both beautiful and delicious.

Pedro Quintanilla was a man of passion, art, and tradition. His love for tequila and his commitment to supporting the artisans who produce it have left a lasting legacy in the world of spirits. And with Azulejos, Skelly, Trophy Head, and now Gran Alambique Tequila, his vision of art and tradition in every bottle lives on.
